Man and Woman Arrested after 10-month-old Baby Overdoses on Oxy Pills

PALM BEACH AREA, Fla.– The Palm Beach Area police department has released a report of a 10-month-old girl who was rushed to a healthcare facility just two days after Christmas day after overdosing on drugs.

According to a case record, the baby girl endured an overdose on the night of Dec. 27; Fire Rescue revived her using Narcan, a medication used to deal with overdoses.

PBSO claimed the child’s mother, 24-year-old Melissa Katz, admitted to smoking two “Oxys” with her guy, 24-year-old Kaeden Walton, the night before making use of tin aluminum foil, and also three more “Oxys” on Dec. 27 in their apartment or condo in the 2400 block of Lake Worth Road in SUV Lake Well worth.

Katz said, “whenever they smoke, they either go into the restroom and also turn the fan on or go outside,” according to her arrest report.

Katz added they leave the infant unattended in the bedroom of their one-bedroom apartment or condo when they smoke, the arrest report specified.

According to investigators, Katz stated she and Walton got involved in a battle around 5 p.m. on Dec. 27, and throughout the argument, the youngster “was left neglected, however not more than five minutes” on the bed in the room.

Adhering to the overdose, the Division of children and also Family members, in addition to PBSO’s Unique Sufferers Device, replied to the apartment.

” While there, [investigators] uncovered several things taken into consideration to be drug paraphernalia, along with several prescription containers, both opened up and closed, scattered concerning the bed,” according to the arrest record.

The report went onto claim that since the child was left unattended on the bed, “it appears that she would have had access to any one of the numerous recommended narcotics, in addition to burned tin aluminum foil, with residue, used for smoking cigarettes narcotics, that was also on the bed where she was at.”.

” The youngster was jeopardized, allowing her to consume a substance causing her ending up being unresponsive,” the apprehension record specified.

Katz and Walton were both apprehended and registered into the Hand Coastline Area Prison on child abuse charges.

Microdosing LSD for Alzheimer’s Safe in Early Human Trial

Results from one of the first placebo-controlled clinical trials investigating the effects of microdosing Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) have been published. According to the new study, Phase 1 trial is the first level in testing whether certain kinds of experimental microdose techniques could be beneficial as a therapeutic approach for treating Alzheimer’s disease. While new data doesn’t identify significant cognitive benefits in microdosing, it does prove that the method is safe enough to try on larger groups.

The movement for LSD and psilocybin to confer acute anti-depressant effects have been tested in the past-showing the same results. Psilocybin, in particular, has demonstrated hopeful enough in this area for the FDA to give it Breakthrough Therapy status twice over the last year. One of the new ways this compound helps is by stimulating serotonin 5-HT2A receptors in the brain.

The team explains that these particular brain receptors not only mediate cognitive function, however, but disruptions to these neural processes have also been discovered in most early symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, including psychiatric symptoms liked anxiety and depression.

“Our research with serotonin 5-HT2A receptor agonists, such as LSD, suggests that they may represent a new strategy to treat diseases associated with chronic inflammation,” describes Charles Nichols, co-author of the new study.

“LSD’s unique polypharmacology may serve to enhance its capacity to simultaneously modulate multiple key pathological processes in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease, including neuroinflammation, that is implicated in its progression from mild cognitive impairment.”

Due to the potency of the LSD, it restricts its ability to be distributed broadly and consistently as conventional medicine. Experts will be able to give one or two potent doses accompanied by structured psychotherapy sessions that may help treat major depression or addiction. Yet, these psychedelics are not realistically deployable in cases for sustained treatments.

Microdosing has become a huge interest not only for users but for the scientist who wants to explore the actual effects. Researchers from the University of Chicago conducted one of the first studies to explore these questions.

The examination did not explore the longer-term effects of microdosing but rather was investigating how single, shallow LSD doses affect a subject’s mood and cognition. A typical hallucinogenic LSD dose is approximately 100 to 200 micrograms (μg). When they tested four different dosages – a placebo, 6.5, 13, or 26 μg – the researchers inferred 13 μg is the highest dose recommended for a microdose. At 26 μg, subjects began experiencing “drug-like sensations.”

However, this new study reports results from a trial carried out in the UK. Phase 1 clinical trial set out mainly to explore the safety and tolerability of periodic LSD microdoses in healthy older adults. The test is primarily a forerunner to a more significant Phase 2 study on the efficacy of LSD microdoses for Alzheimer’s disease.

“The study provides reassuring safety data and opens the door for larger-scale clinical trials to evaluate the potential therapeutic effects of LSD,” says Robin Carhart-Harris, head of the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London.

The new research offers a useful safety profile for sustained LSD microdosing, allowing scientists to move forward with more focused efficacy studies.

However, the new following data on the cognitive outcomes of this kind of microdosing is so far not pointing to the anecdotally popular technique as improving very much at all.

Yet, the new study offers a periodic dosing strategy that more resembles the experience of anecdotal microdoses; yet, it also did not identify any particular cognitive or sensory alterations in its cohort.

When under the influence of a microdose, the subjects consistently overestimated how long a couple of seconds lasted. It is still unclear precisely what this discover even means in terms of how an LSD microdose influences explicitly a person’s subjective sense of time. However, what the study did make clear is that microdoses may confer some degree of cognitive control in sub-perceptual doses, even when the user does not perceive any conscious effect from the drug.

The new study was published in the journal Psychopharmacology.

The diseases selected for preventive chemotherapy are listed and are only Guinea- worm disease, cysticercosis ,trematode infections, lymphatic filariasis ,onchoserciasis ,schistosomiasis and helmintgiasis.

“Blinding trachoma control through the SAFE strategy- combining drug treatment with hygiene and environmental management- can be linked to helminth control interventions to improve the overall health of the affected community. The diseases include cysticercosis, dracanculiasis ( guinea-worm diseases), foodborne tramatode infections, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistomiasis , and soil-transmitted helminthiasis ,” stated DNDi.

This preventive chemotherapy on neglected tropical diseases is currently being applied only to some neglected tropical diseases which are already being successfully treated by available drugs and whose current drugs are considered safe.

“PCT focuses on diseases for which a strategy exists as well as on tools and the availability of safe and effective drugs that make it feasible to implement large – scale preventive chemotherapy,” stated DNDi.

The main purpose of this chemotherapy intervention is to support tropical neglected diseases endemic countries’ national efforts to achieve more success to the successful reports so far of treated a billion cases of neglected tropical diseases in the world every year for the past four years.

The Future of Legal Psychedelic Nasal Spray

Forecasting a wave of psychedelic legalization over the coming years, Oregon-based start-up Silo Health has established a magic mushroom nasal spray concentrated on delivering exact, regulated psychedelic microdoses utilizing an easy inhaler. New Atlas contacted Silo Wellness creator and CEO Mike Arnold to learn precisely how this bold item works.

Along with the swiftly advancing psychedelic scientific research movement, with researchers carefully exploring the clinical, as well as healing, uses formerly taboo psychedelic compounds, is a growing grassroots motion to legalize a few of these substances. Throughout 2019 a variety of different neighborhood jurisdictions the USA began the initial stage of decriminalizing psychedelic materials.

The motion seemingly began with the passing of a tally initiative in the City and also County of Denver back in March. The openly elected initiative legalized personal usage as well as ownership of magic mushrooms. Adhering to that landmark moment, several other cities in the nation have pushed forward similar actions.

The long game subsequently is looking toward the 2020 United States elections and obtaining a range of measures on state ballots. There are arguments among protestors, however, over just how broad a press there must be for entertainment legalization. A proposed 2020 ballot step filed-The The golden state is recommending complete retail legalization of psilocybin magic mushrooms, while the present measure suggested in Oregon is not considering industrial sales but rather concentrating on legalizing therapeutic uses in certified facilities.

Inspired by the explosive growth of the company in the marijuana market, as recreational legalization spreads across America, some business owners are considering psilocybin as the following prospective medication to hit the broader market. One Denver-based company called Strava, as an example, has currently begun creating tea and coffee products instilled with microdoses of psilocybin.

These products may not be legal now, yet lots of are getting ready for legalization, prepping business products to offer the impulses of every sort of recreational customer.

Why create a magic mushroom nasal spray?

Silo Health is among those aforementioned entrepreneurial start-ups, and it is working to develop a magic mushroom-based nasal spray. The suggestion behind the item is to supply individuals a means into the psychedelic experience, making use of a controlled shipment gadget that can use regular controlled microdoses.

” We addressed the age-old trouble with plant- and also fungus-based medicine: Exactly how do you understand just how much is a dose?” clarifies Michael Hartman, a knowledgeable pharma product developer dealing with Silo Wellness. “How do you stay clear of taking too much, like the marijuana edibles issue? We additionally took care of to resolve among the usual problems of some mushroom individuals: taste and also indigestion.”

The Chief Executive Officer, as well as creator of Silo Health, is former criminal attorney Mike Arnold, who left his regulation industry work to begin a cannabis expanding business back in 2016. After a life-changing magic mushroom experience in 2018, Arnold saw an obstacle in the motion to bring psychedelics into the mainstream. His very first magic mushroom experience was thankfully one assisted by a well-informed physician, who could supply a regulated dose, however, suppose that guided experience had not been readily available to someone?

Arnold saw the service to the main problem is a regulated nasal spray that administered a metered, fast-acting dosage of magic mushrooms in a way that might reduce much less skilled people right into the psychedelic experience.

The nasal spray being created is not pure psilocybin, but rather, Arnold tells New Atlas is a “complete my-spectrum extract of Jamaican magic mushrooms in an aqueous service.”

The firm is focusing its existing research on uptake speed and bioavailability. Arnold suggests the advantages of application via a nasal spray are a much faster beginning, lowering the hold-up radically as well as decreasing the risk of eating way too much. While also a decrease in a few of the undesirable nauseous results of digesting mushrooms in the gut.

” Our company believes that the nasal track has greater bioavailability and also faster uptake speed than experiencing the intestine,” Arnold informs New Atlas. “Once the product is much more commonly available to the general public, appropriate dosing will be disclosed, but, currently, one dosage in each nostril has the biomass matching of no more than 0.1 grams. We are targeting a sub-psychedelic dosage now with a tiny psychedelic dosage prepared for soon.”

The item is presently being developed in Jamaica, among the only nations in the world where magic mushrooms are entirely lawful. Arnold suggests dose-ranging research studies are underway in the island country, and also, the firm is initially focusing on creating an item targeted at microdose-levels of magic mushrooms.

Willie Nelson Retires his Lungs but Credits his Health to Cannabis

America’s favorite pothead has shocked the media by retiring his iron lungs. Willie Nelson, the famous country star whose name means lighting up, announced his pot retirement. In a recent interview, Willie has confirmed the rumors that he has stopped smoking cannabis due to breathing issues.

Willie told the press, “I have abused my lungs quite a bit in the past, so breathing is a little more difficult these days, and I have to be careful.” Now 86, Nelson explained, “I don’t smoke anymore — take better care of myself,” said the Grammy-winning crooner of “On the Road Again.”

Known for his long braids, bandanas, and love for marijuana, Nelson has been a public supporter in the fight to legalize weed, co-chairing the advisory board of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

Like many celebrities, Willie’s Reserve, “a premium cannabis lifestyle brand,” was launched in 2016 in partnership with a New York-based private equity firm.

Despite his recent retirement from the plant, Willie still thanks and credits marijuana for its medical benefits. He believes he is still alive today due to the years he smoked marijuana.

“I wouldn’t be alive. It saved my life, really. I wouldn’t have lived 85 years if I’d have kept drinking and smoking like I was when I was 30, 40 years old. I think that weed kept me from wanting to kill people,” Nelson explained to the magazine, adding that it “probably kept a lot of people from wanting to kill me, too — out there drunk, running around.”

At the end of the interview, Nelson, who has in the past been hospitalized for pneumonia and emphysema over the years, fired back, saying, “I don’t give a [expletive]. I’m here; I’m glad to be here.”

New Cannabis Treatment for Multiple Sclerosis (M.S.) and Huntington’s Disease (H.D.) Shows Promise

Early this week, the MMJ International Holdings announced that it has agreed to the production of its proprietary cannabis-based gel capsule. A new product mix of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) that would comply with the harsh guidelines set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

The first agreement made with a pharma solutions company hopes to allow MMJ to launch clinical trials of its oral capsule as a new treatment for multiple sclerosis (M.S.) and Huntington’s disease (H.D.).

Both compounds CBD and THC are two of the most abundant cannabinoids found in the plant. CBD is a non-psychoactive compound of marijuana and is said to have neuroprotective properties; still, THC is the primary psychoactive constituent of cannabis.

“We firmly believe that our MMJ natural whole plant-derived molecules with a unique combination of pharmacological properties will be FDA approved as a safe and effective prescription drug that can be of great benefit in treating patients with M.S. and H.D. diseases,” Duane Boise, CEO of MMJ International Holdings, said in a news conference.

The team announced that planned clinical trials are now expected to provide the data needed to show that a marijuana-based product will help patients. Scientists say it will help symptoms like tremors and motor control issues common to several neurological disorders.

In support of this new product, several universities are now developing trials testing the safety and efficacy of daily treatment with MMJ’s gelatin capsules in patients with M.S. and Huntington’s.

“As MMJ International Holdings continues to advance to its clinical trials, a specialty pharmaceutical solutions company will be supporting MMJ with the FDA, DEA,” explained Elio Mariani, Ph.D., executive vice president of research and development.

“Patients will benefit from cGMP [current Good Manufacturing Practice]-quality therapies in an accessible and efficient format.”

The manufacturing company in charge of the new gel cannabis product has not been announced to the public yet.

MMJ-001 and MMJ-002 are climbing the charts in popularity.

MMJ-001 is being made to treat spasticity (muscle stiffness) in M.S., and MMJ-002 to pinpoint and treat Huntington’ s-associated chorea or uncontrolled and involuntary movements.

MMJ-002 was first designed as an orphan drug by the FDA in January as a potential Huntington’s treatment. As the formula for MMJ-001, it is a liquid formulation of highly purified CBD/THC.

Since the legalization of hemp, cannabis programs have been putting CBD in products containing THC-which are not FDA approved. The FDA has sent multiple letters to varies companies warning them to stop all sales and production, alleging they made unsubstantiated claims about the health benefits of their products. Known as benefits to patients “without sufficient evidence or FDA approval.”

Amy Abernethy, MD, PhD, FDA’s principal deputy commissioner, said in one warning, “The agency is working “to clarify further the regulatory approach for products containing cannabis and cannabis-derived compounds like CBD, while using all available resources to monitor the marketplace and protect public health by taking action as needed against companies.”

“We recognize that there is a significant public interest in cannabis and cannabis-derived compounds; however, we must work together to fill in the knowledge gaps about the science, safety, and quality of many of these products,” Abernethy added.

She concluded her warning by, “We are committed to advancing our regulation of these products through an approach that … prioritizes public health, fosters innovation, and promotes consumer confidence.”

Clinical Study Suggests Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Effective For Insomnia

TMS consists of repetitive high-frequency magnetic pulses being administered by a trained facilitator via small probes placed on the scalp. This sounds much more complicated and daunting than it is. Unlike a well-known treatment it’s often compared to (but quite different from), Electroconvulsive therapy, TMS delivers results with minimal side effects at impressively-high safety rates. It frequently takes multiple sessions to witness the full impact of TMS; however, these highly-acclaimed effects are growing more abundant every year.

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder characterized by its sufferers by difficulties falling or remaining asleep, or non-restful quality of sleep. With frequent relapses and failures in treatment, chronic insomnia can be damaging to the overall quality of life of its sufferers. Therefore, the emerging means of treating this disorder are growing incredibly necessary.

A Background Of TMS

In 2008, TransCranial Magnetic Stimulation was approved by the FDA for the marketable treatment of major depressive disorder. Eventually, after more research, TMS was also approved for treating pain that is associated with particular types of migraines.

TMS is technically only approved by the Federal Drug Administration for the treatment of depression. However, evidence suggests that it may also help a myriad of other mental illnesses and chronic issues, including insomnia.

Hope For Insomnia

After suffering for years with a disorder such as insomnia – and often exhausting many means of treatment, like prescription drugs, many people don’t know where to turn for sleep improvement. However, TMS seems to be a promising candidate for improving this illness.

One study done by a Chinese university found that TranScranial Magnetic Stimulation had extremely intriguing results when compared against a controlled group that did not receive TMS. The Department of Sleep And Psychology at the Third Military Medical University in China measured the results of TMS on one hundred and twenty insomnia-ridden patients, ultimately finding that repetitive TMS treatments are “more advantageous than both medication and psychotherapy treatments in improving the sleep architecture.”

That’s a pretty bold statement with both the scientific research to back it up and the support of various treatment centers across the country. Not only did TMS help insomnia in this study, but it also significantly reduced the rate of relapse of weak sleep cycles in its controlled groups. TMS relapse rates were the very lowest in this controlled group than in the group of participants that did not receive TMS.

Depression And Other Mental Illnesses

After failed attempts at antidepressant medications, one with treatment-resistant depression is often prone to benefiting greatly from TMS. Trained administers carry out the treatment quickly and with ease, and it involves minimal side effects – possibly less than antidepressants, and admittedly less than Electromagnetic Therapy. Newer studies on TMS’ efficacy of remedying depression continue proving that TMS is highly effective in treating major depressive disorder. It appears that TransCranial Magnetic Stimulation is gaining velocity in the world of academic research.

In a culture ridden with a crisis of overprescribed pharmaceuticals and increasing numbers of addicted citizens, the United States finds great hope in a therapeutic, alternative type of medical technology such as TMS. With minimal side effects, TMS seems like a no-brainer for those who are struggling with chronic mental illnesses, mood disorders, and neuropathic disorders.

Certain mental health services, such as one in San Diego, Brain Center TMS, have begun to utilize this technology for the benefit of depression and other people living with mental illness nation-wide.

Brain Center TMS mentions on their website that they are “a recognized leader in providing Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to resolve mental and neuropathic disorders, without medication, using the most technologically advanced system available today. TMS is a proven, breakthrough therapy that heals specific areas of the brain that are impaired by brain cell dysfunction, which results in significant improvement in mood, function, energy, focus, and general well-being.”

TransCranial Magnetic Stimulation is not as well-known as other forms of treating psychiatric and neuropathic illnesses. Still, it has the potential to improve patients’ quality of life when other means of treatment fail. Gaining more traction in the world of psychiatric therapy, TMS may be the next competitor for the number-one method of improving peoples’ lives.

Ayahuasca – a ‘psychedelic brew’ Hold Promising Health Benefits

New research reveals a more profound look and understanding into the South American super-drug known as- Ayahuasca – a ‘psychedelic brew’ made from vines and leaves in the Amazon jungle, which is popular with celebrities like Sting and Lindsay Lohan. The drug distorts brain waves to create a vivid ‘waking-dream’ state and has been traced back to thousands of years to the earliest of shamans and native Americans.

The drug, used as a traditional spiritual medicine, contains dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a hallucinogenic drug that is illegal in the UK.

Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris, head of the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College, stated: ‘DMT is a particularly intriguing psychedelic.

He added in his research reports, ‘The visual vividness and depth of immersion produced by high-doses of the substance seem to be on a scale above what is reported with more widely studied psychedelics such as psilocybin or “magic mushrooms.”’

The team of experts, gave 13 volunteers a dose of DMT, before fitting them with electroencephalogram (EEG) headgear to detect the brain’s electrical activity before, during, and after their hallucination experiences.

They discovered, the ‘peak psychedelic experience’ continued for about ten minutes and affected the volunteers’ alpha and theta brain waves.

“The changes in brain activity that accompany DMT are slightly different from what we see with other psychedelics such as psilocybin or LSD, where we see mainly only reductions in brainwaves,” noted Researcher Christopher Timmermann.

He added, ‘Here we saw an emergent rhythm that was present during the most intense part of the experience, suggesting an emerging order amidst the otherwise chaotic patterns of brain activity.’

Dr. Carhart-Harris concluded: ‘It’s hard to capture and communicate what it is like for people experiencing DMT but likening it to dreaming while awake or a near-death experience is useful.”

‘ending his report, he wrote, “We sense that research with DMT may yield important insights into the relationship between brain activity and consciousness, and this small study is the first step along that road.’

The team hopes that through this small yet impactful study, the world will open their eyes to the wonders and possible mental health benefits this drug can bring. The researchers expect their findings will unlock the door to further tests using more sophisticated tools like a functional MRI scanner.

The findings were published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Sting: ‘[I felt] something coursing through every cell in my body — like an intelligence searching for everything. And I am wired to the entire cosmos! I see a crack in the ground, and inside I see a flower growing … it’s my brother – everything! And I realize for the first time this is the only genuine, religious experience I’ve ever had!’

Lindsay Lohan: ‘I did ayahuasca. It changed my life … [I let go of the] wreckage of my past.’

Chelsea Handler: ‘I had all these beautiful imageries of my childhood and me and my sister laughing on a kayak, and all these beautiful things with me and my sister. So [my experience] was very much about opening my mind to loving my sister, and not being so hard on her.’

James Scott: ‘I hallucinated for four to six hours … It was truly the most important thing I have ever done. I came back a very different person.’

Movember the Fight to Spread Awareness Surround Men’s Health

Starting from a small group of guys in Australia in 2003, the Movember movement has grown to be a truly global one, inspiring support from over 5 million Mo Bros and Mo Sisters around the world. Movember’s global success is primarily due to the strength of the worldwide community. Despite the city in which we live, we’re part of something bigger, united by a devotion to helping change the face of men’s health.

As November, zooms by the movement of Movember or NoShavember is in full effect. The idea behind these annual events is to raise awareness around men’s health and mental well being. The Movember Foundation focuses on men’s mental health, and NoShavember is a stance at fighting cancer, regardless of sex.

Travis Garone and Luke Slattery in Melbourne, started their journey together as they developed The Movember Foundation in 2013. Their mission began with a simple idea to bring back the mustache, yet exploded into a movement to raise awareness around prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention in men.

People around the world participate in all kinds of ways. The most popular Movember stance is men will let their facial hair grow out or grow a whole new beard/ mustache. What started with two men with an idea, grew into a global force. Back in 2012, the Movember Foundation was ranked as one of the Top 100 non-governmental organizations in the world by NGO Advisor.

Over 20 countries partake in Movember every year now, and the organization has raised above $700 million, according to its website.

NoShavember, also known as No-Shave November, was organized to raise awareness around cancer. The children of Mathew Hill, who died from colon cancer in 2007, started the project in 2009 to raise money for charity.

The idea behind the cause is to have people step aside from their razors and appreciate the hair that many cancer patients lose during chemotherapy.

The nonprofit inspires people to donate money that could be spent on shaving and grooming to help cancer prevention, research, and education.

The month of November is not over yet! Get involved today.

States with Legal Marijuana Programs Had Lower Rates of Opioid Use

To no one’s surprise, a new study has been published by the International Journal of Drug Policy, which found that states with legal marijuana programs had lower rates of opioid use.

Unlike most previous studies on marijuana legalization’s effects on a state’s opioid use, which were primarily produced by health agencies or medical researchers, this one originated from the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida International University.

Medical cannabis laws, the lead researcher  stated, “may be effective at reducing opioid reliance as survey respondents living in states with medical cannabis legislation are much less apt to report using opioid analgesics than people living in states without such laws, net other factors.”

The real eye-opener of the study, “results further indicate that the presence of medicinal cannabis legislation appears not to influence opioid misuse,” they concluded.

In laments term, there is zero epidemiological or criminological proof that smoking weed leads to abusing harder drugs like cocaine, meth — or opioids, despite scare campaigns and fear-mongering from prohibitionists.

According to the naysaying Stanford examinations, the main reason why the first states to legalize medical marijuana also had fewer opioid-related deaths was mainly cause those states were more liberal, wealthier, and provided better access to health care (i.e., addiction treatment, naloxone to counteract overdoses, etc.).

The Stanford researchers also concluded that since they utilized newer data going up to 2017 — after almost every US state had provided some medical cannabis program — their findings were more accurate.

Since the earlier studies relied on data from when barely 13 to 17 US states had legal, medical cannabis.

The question of whether marijuana could become the new pain killer of the future and eliminate all prescription medication is still up in the air. However, studies like these only strengthen the possibilities.

Bad Behavior Now illegal to Punish In California Schools with Suspensions

An odd proposal has been passed by California’s public and charter schools that make it illegal to suspend disruptive students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday signed into law Senate Bill 419, now banning willful defiance suspensions in grades four and five. It additionally forbids such suspensions in grades six through eight for five years.

This new law will take full effect on July 1, 2020. Many parents and school officials are torn on the new regulations, questioning the reasoning behind it.

Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, who formulated the new law, assumes it will “keep kids in school where they belong and where teachers and counselors can help them thrive.” She claims, “SB 419 puts the needs of kids first.”

According to California, a California Senate analysis of SB 419, students missed more than 150,000 days of school due to suspensions for unruly behavior in the 2016-17 academic year. Other arguments are that students of color are disproportionately affected by such suspensions.

Skinner believes SB 419 “may be one of the best ways to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline.” Many supports like civil rights activist Dolores Huerta expressed their opinions saying, “I strongly believe that SB 419 will bring justice to California youth by eliminating suspensions for disruption and defiance.”

“Putting an end to discriminatory discipline policies and instituting restorative justice practices.” Yet, the bill was opposed by the Charter School Development Center, whose administrative director argued that SB 419 is a “one size fits all” enactment that is “a fix in search of a problem.”

California is one of the only states to have passed this kind of behavior management law; other states have expressed little to no interest.

Overcoming Depression without Medication – A Progressive, Durable Solution

It’s hard to find anyone – children, teens, or adults, who has not, or who does not suffer from depression these days. The National Institute of Health (NIH) reports that over 18,000,000 adults suffered from a major depressive episode in 2018 with 18-25 year- olds comprising the largest group. Everyone seems to be affected by depression, either personally or peripherally. And it is becoming more pervasive, every year.

Depression is not contained in a sealed little box, affecting only the one actually experiencing it; it spills over and out, and it exacts a costly toll on others, specifically loved ones, as well as on employment costs, healthcare costs, personal finances, and so much more. The World Health Organization reports that depression is the 2nd leading cause of disability today.

Oddly, as prevalent and proliferating as depression is, the historic treatment protocols are largely less than adequately effective. Antidepressant medications, the go-to treatment for depression, are costly, are often considerably less effective than the desired outcome, and they are beset with undesired side effects. Most depression sufferers obtain a prescription for antidepressant medication(s) from their primary care physician, which typically results in a ‘trial and error’ process over an extended period of time to try to find a medication(s) that provide some relief with the least number and intensity of side effects. Others may actually consult a psychiatrist, who often follows the same process.

The problem with medication as a response to depression is multifaceted: It is largely ineffective; multiple medications are often needed for any relief; it can become less effective over time; it creates dependence; it is temporary (i.e. it must be taken at a therapeutic dose for any effect); it is ‘global’ in the body, not specific; and its side effects, such as lethargy, ‘foggy brain’, weight gain, sexual apathy or dysfunction, among many others, make it intolerable.

Talk therapy, the other time-tried treatment modality, can be helpful, but it often has limited success, requires months, even years of commitment, is expensive, and it’s time-consuming.

Additionally, neither of these interventions address depression symptoms at a physical, structural, cellular level.

Another historical option for the most treatment-resistant cases of major depression is Electroconvulsive (‘shock’) therapy, which conjures images of ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’, and which is still utilized in certain instances, today. Electroconvulsive therapy emits an electrical current into the brain; it is ‘invasive’; it requires that the patient be sedated to administer; and it has side effects, primarily memory loss.

Surprisingly unknown to the vast majority of depression sufferers, and even more notably unknown to the majority of medical/psychiatric professionals, there is another, more effective depression treatment option than the above referenced ones, which has been widely researched, tested, and FDA approved, since 2008 – transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a revolutionary, proven therapy for treating depression. It works by introducing a magnetic field not an electric current into the brain in order to stimulate dysfunctional neuronal cells in the ‘mood’ center of the brain, which increases neuronal activity, connectivity, and plasticity, thereby significantly improving mood, function, energy, focus, and general well-being.

TMS is non-invasive, meaning that the mechanism of treatment is ‘outside’ of, and does not physically enter into the body – the TMS device simply rests on a specific area of the head. It requires no anesthesia. It has almost zero side effects. And there is no recovery period required after each treatment, such that the patient can resume all normal activities immediately following the treatment session.

Since its approval for use by the FDA, transcranial magnetic stimulation has been increasingly researched and vetted and it is finally becoming far better known and widely understood by medical professionals and the general population alike. Statistics indicate that TMS is effective in 70%+ of patients with many experiencing complete remission of depression symptoms.

Dr. Alan Manevitz from Cornell Medical School and his partner, Dr. James Halper from New York University School of Medicine, two of the pioneers in TMS therapy, labeled it ‘a new pathway of treatment’ without the problems associated with antidepressant drugs.

The Center for Disease Control has stated that the potential for TMS is enormous, and increasing. This statement is being confirmed, broadly, by a growing number of psychiatrists and neurologists, who have observed in their own patient populations the tremendous effect tool TMS is in reducing and often completely remitting depression, even in the most treatment-resistant sufferers.

Many physicians are using transcranial magnetic stimulation, more and more, as the first line of treatment for their new patients, as well as with their long-term patients, who have experienced minimal success with medication and/or talk therapy over time.

Assuming that depression will follow the upward expansion curve it has followed for the past several years, and continue to affect a greater and greater portion of the population, the need for new, progressive, and effective treatments will increase, correspondingly. Transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy’s day seems to have arrived. It is hard to argue against pursuing a treatment option that is non-invasive, has almost no side effects, is minimally time-intensive, and which has such a high remittance rate, upon completing a single course of treatment.

Presidential Candidates are Releasing Plans Including Cannabis for the VA

To honor the men and women who have sacrificed their lives, several presidential candidates are releasing plans aimed at helping those who served the country in the military. This Veterans Day, three significant contenders are announcing that they are going to be including cannabis-specific bills in their proposals. One candidate, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), wants to make sure that health experts and doctors at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) “have the option of appropriately prescribing medical marijuana to their patients.”

As of now, the current VA policy, government doctors are restricted from recommending any medical marijuana or cannabis products even if the state deems is legal.

Under the Sanders plan, announced on Monday, also included“any servicemember discharged from the military for marijuana use or possession can apply for a discharge upgrade so that they can become eligible for the full complement of services and benefits provided by the VA.”

Before he released his new plan, Sanders co-sponsored an unfinished Senate bill that would implement a safe harbor federally legalizing the use and possession of cannabis for military veterans in states that allow it. That bill would further let VA practitioners issue medical marijuana recommendations to their patients. Implementing this new bill will hopefully decrease the opioid abuse amount the Veteran population.

Another Politician, a veteran himself, announced his plan yesterday, voicing his pledge. “Support legislation that will empower VA physicians to issue medical cannabis recommendations to augment a veterans’ broader treatment plan, following the laws of states where it is legal,” announced South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D). His plan would also urge the VA to “conduct studies on the use of marijuana to treat pain.”

Rep. Barbara Lee also announced a veterans-specific cannabis reform message on Monday, When it comes to military veterans and medical marijuana.

“Prohibiting VA doctors from recommending cannabis to qualifying patients, while continuing to rely on pharmaceuticals drugs like opioids as a treatment, is both a dangerous and illogical policy,” wrote the c0-chair of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus in an email to NORML activists. “We know medical marijuana can be an effective and safe treatment for veterans, and it is time to stop making them seek private, out-of-network physicians to access it.”

FDA Warns Pregnant and Breastfeeding Mothers to Stay Away from THC and CBD

In the evergrowing FAD among CBD users, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning new and expecting mothers to stay away from THC and CBD products of all kinds, despite the legal status or non-psychoactive properties.

Just like the era of excellent tobacco use, even doctors had posters that would suggest a cigarette a day, that soon took a turn for the worst. According to a newly released memo published by the FDA aimed at pregnant and breastfeeding women earlier this month, and made sure to caution against the use of both THC and hemp-derived CBD, regardless of the increasing demand in both legal marijuana dispensaries and retail outlets in America.

“We are now seeing CBD-containing products everywhere,” the memo reads. “CBD can be found in many different products, like drugs, foods, products marketed as dietary supplements, and cosmetics. These products often make questionable health promises about CBD. [The] FDA wants you to know there may be serious risks to using cannabis products, including those containing CBD if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.”

The memo came after the FDA had examined and confirmed multiple studies connected to cannabis use to early complications with pregnancy. However, it also made apparent to note that survey into all phases of cannabis use and effect have been severely hindered in the face of federal prohibition. Yet, with the little proof of complications and reports of mislabeled and potentially dangerous CBD products being sold indiscriminately, the FDA would rather play safe than sorry.

“…There is a potential for CBD products to be contaminated with substances that may pose a risk to the fetus or breastfed baby, including THC,” the FDA wrote. “We have also heard reports of CBD potentially containing other contaminants (e.g., pesticides, heavy metals, bacteria, and fungus); we are investigating this.”

Aside from the pregnancy-specific warnings, the FDA is currently in the process of forming regulations and restrictions for the country’s evergrowing hemp CBD market. Just like anything without those implemented guidelines, hemp CBD products are being sold without any oversight or inspection. With that being said, the FDA has now begun to organize a list of regulations and restrictions for the country’s growing hemp CBD market.

CBD and hemp without any regulations can be harmful. As of now, hemp CBD products are being sold without any oversight or accountability. The FDA has already begun to issue warnings to companies that have made claims about the medical benefits their CBD products posses.

The science behind pregnancy and marijuana or CBD consumption is minimal, posing severe health risks. There is undoubtedly much to be learned about marijuana, pregnancy, and breastfeeding before any accurate reports about a correlation can be confirmed.

Until the FDA steps up their game and conducts more clinical studies to confirm if cannabinoids can be safe for new and expecting mothers, the risk of complications will always be present. As a country, the research and science behind the plant its self needs to be increased.

Higher Education Act (HEA), Aid Elimination Penalty: A Thing of the Past

The amount of student debt that has accumulated within America is almost unfathomable, however, a new federal law now allows more students to obtain financial aid. A congressional committee approved a bill over the weekend that would repeal a federal law that punishes college students who are found guilty of drug offenses by not allowing them to obtain financial aid.

According to the Higher Education Act (HEA), Aid Elimination Penalty, which was enacted in 1998, has been a debt to hundreds of thousands of students and even cost them access to the means of pay for their tuition, many because of low-level marijuana offenses.

Many people who are involved in the justice and educational system agree that blocking students from being able to finish college is a counterproductive way to answer to substance use and legal system within it.

“The best possible intervention for a young person struggling in their relationship with drugs is quality education,” Betty Aldworth, executive director of Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP), explained in an interview. “Evidence demonstrates that denying them access only harms the students and their communities.”

The new bill, which was approved by the House Education & Labor Committee, also eliminates a drug conviction question from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is the “trap” the Department of Education has used to enforce the punishment.

In 2006, the penalty was already scaled back from its original form, but only took away the reach-back effect that punished students for past offenses and has since only applied to those convicted to those already receiving aid. However, many advocates say the questions FASFA ask are very unclear and have scared away many eligible students from even applying.

“We know anecdotally that a lot of students are easily confused by the question,” Grant Smith, deputy director of national affairs for the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA), announced in an interview. “They may confuse an arrest or even a police encounter as sufficient cause not to complete the FAFSA form.”

The next step for the repeal language is to be approved by the law. Many stakeholders involved with the Unlock Higher Ed Coalition have worked closely with the HEA reauthorization process this coming year to get rid of the drug conviction penalty and to bring back Pell grant eligibility to incarcerated students.

“No modern movement for social change can succeed without the voices of young people and those who are directly impacted by injustice,” Aldworth pointed out that SSDP has worked for “more than 20 years to ensure every American can access education, regardless of whether they have been caught using drugs.”

The reality of it all is that students from families that have no problem affording college without any grants or loans will never know or will need to worry about losing their education. Many people with money, who have been charged with the same cannabis or drug-related crimes as lower-income families do not have to worry about losing aid. Many advocates also argue that it has a discriminatory impact due to the drug laws that are enforced more often and more harshly against people of color.

“Young people of color are disproportionately impacted by these policies just as people of color are disproportionately targeted for enforcement of drug laws in general,” Aldworth concluded the interview. “This is one part of a massive system of systemic discrimination against communities, with collateral consequences that reach far beyond a single person’s education.”

Studies Confirm ” Smokers Face” is Real, and Cigarette Use is on The Rise- Again.

Smoking cigarettes keeps people uglier and older.

A brand-new countrywide study has validated that there’s science behind the term, “Cigarette or smoker’s Face,” created in the 1980s for exactly how cigarette habits change one’s appearance. Cigarette smokers that looked older than their age had two hereditary versions that non-smokers did not have, according to the searchings for released in PLOS Genes.

And it gets uglier: Cigarette use in movies and tv shows that are rated PG-13 raised 120 percent between 2010 and 2018 and jumped 57 percent in all screenings, according to a brand-new report by the Centers for Disease Control and also Avoidance. Specialists at the United States Doctor General’s Workplace have lengthy alerted that Hollywood’s depictions of cigarettes as a “social standard” will undoubtedly make impressionable PG-13 target markets “more probable to smoke.”

As the hidden dangers of e-cigarette and also vape use have gradually been disclosed, several youths have stated that they are currently turning back to tobacco cigarettes to feed their nicotine dependency. The CDC likewise included that teen cigarette use has been climbing, given that 2018 as vaping has expanded in appeal.

Couple Charged With having an Infant Where Drug Deal Shooting Took Place

A scene from a nightmare took place this week when an infant who had tested positive for cocaine in its umbilical cord was being raised in a drug house. During a drug deal gone wrong, a shot was fired almost hitting the baby., according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday in the Dodge County Courthouse.

Matthew Hansen, 27, and Sara Schimmel, 21, are facing felony charges of neglecting a child without doing specific harm to a child under 6. if found guilty of all charges, they could both face up tp 3½ years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

According to the report, a Dodge County Sheriff’s Office deputy was dispatched to the 400 blocks of North Main Street in Reeseville for a child abuse complaint. The doctor who examined the three-month-old baby reported that the infant had tested positive for cocaine during her monthly check-ups. The deputy notified the doctor he would notify child protective services and check on the child’s living conditions.

According to the criminal complaint, the deputy could smell marijuana when he entered the home. Schimmel confessed to using cocaine the previous Sunday and told the deputy she also used cannabis every day. However, the officer did not locate illegal drugs or substances in the home and determined there were food and supplies for the infant.

Just two months later, an incident occurred in the residence when Hansen was shot during a robbery. Hansen admitted he was attempting to sell drugs on May 16, when the drugs and money were taken. The report claims that when the shooting happened, the baby was only 6 feet away from Hansen when he was shot. The girlfriend was next to the baby tied up with zip ties.

Once the robbers left, the couple drove themselves to the Columbus Community Hospital, now called Prairie Ridge Health. The father was later taken to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison and claimed he feared for his daughter’s life.

Even with the confession of both Schimmel and Hansen that they sold cocaine and drugs from home daily, the dodge County Child Protective Services deemed not to take the child away. Hansen also admitted to having thousands of dollars in inventory and cash.

“Nature and probable consequences of this exposure would be harm, although harm may not have occurred,” according to the criminal complaint.

Nov. 4. is when the first hearing will take place. This only highlights the importance of substance abuse treatment. For more information regarding couples drug rehab, please contact (888) 325-2454

Retired Pro Hockey Players Will Take CBD for Brain Injury Study

Over the last decade, the NFL has urged its presidents to allow the use of medical cannabis. Many health trainers who treat these players have pushed for marijuana as an alternative treatment for the player’s injuries. Now, the NHL is following their path. Retired hockey players have joined one of the most extensive studies of its kind.

A project between Neeka Health, the NHL Alumni Association, and Canadian company Canopy Growth are said to take place next yeat. The main goal is to explore the true potential of cannabis in sports. The Canadian cannabis company will be leading the experts of 100 participants. Fifty athletes will receive CBD, or cannabidiol, in a controlled study to assess whether the compound is safe and effective for treating brain trauma while the other half of the participants will take a placebo.

“We are reasonably optimistic that cannabis, and especially the CBD part of cannabis, can relieve a lot of that suffering,” said Dr. Charles Tator, a neurosurgeon who specializes in concussions.

He added, “It’s rather sad when you see these giants of sport having to deal with terrible headaches and emotional issues as well — there’s quite a bit of anxiety and depression and PTSD in athletes that have gone unrecognized.”

As an athlete experiences head injuries or trauma, it will lead to permanent damage, leading to stress disorders, dementia, or mood swings in some players. However, in some cases, concussions can ignite a life-threatening hemorrhage in the brain. According to multiple studies, cannabis can reduce inflammation and even has the ability to regenerate damaged brain and nerve cells

As of today, the NHL still bans hockey players from taking any cannabis product, medicinially or recreationally. Although CBD products lack high amounts of THC, some traces can still show up on a regular drug test. However, the NHL has been known to be one of the laxest pro league when it comes to drug test for cannabis. For example, ESPN reported if NHL players come up hot during a drug test, league doctors weigh whether they believe the player may have a drug abuse problem. When they deem it a problem they will issue the players to a drug counseling class. In some instances the league will give fines or suspend the player.

Although, unlike the NFL, the NHL does not permeanlty ban players for smoking only weed. The sports league may soon follow the NHL’s league prior to the histoircal sports study.
