Couple Charged With having an Infant Where Drug Deal Shooting Took Place

A scene from a nightmare took place this week when an infant who had tested positive for cocaine in its umbilical cord was being raised in a drug house. During a drug deal gone wrong, a shot was fired almost hitting the baby., according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday in the Dodge County Courthouse.

Matthew Hansen, 27, and Sara Schimmel, 21, are facing felony charges of neglecting a child without doing specific harm to a child under 6. if found guilty of all charges, they could both face up tp 3½ years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

According to the report, a Dodge County Sheriff’s Office deputy was dispatched to the 400 blocks of North Main Street in Reeseville for a child abuse complaint. The doctor who examined the three-month-old baby reported that the infant had tested positive for cocaine during her monthly check-ups. The deputy notified the doctor he would notify child protective services and check on the child’s living conditions.

According to the criminal complaint, the deputy could smell marijuana when he entered the home. Schimmel confessed to using cocaine the previous Sunday and told the deputy she also used cannabis every day. However, the officer did not locate illegal drugs or substances in the home and determined there were food and supplies for the infant.

Just two months later, an incident occurred in the residence when Hansen was shot during a robbery. Hansen admitted he was attempting to sell drugs on May 16, when the drugs and money were taken. The report claims that when the shooting happened, the baby was only 6 feet away from Hansen when he was shot. The girlfriend was next to the baby tied up with zip ties.

Once the robbers left, the couple drove themselves to the Columbus Community Hospital, now called Prairie Ridge Health. The father was later taken to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison and claimed he feared for his daughter’s life.

Even with the confession of both Schimmel and Hansen that they sold cocaine and drugs from home daily, the dodge County Child Protective Services deemed not to take the child away. Hansen also admitted to having thousands of dollars in inventory and cash.

“Nature and probable consequences of this exposure would be harm, although harm may not have occurred,” according to the criminal complaint.

Nov. 4. is when the first hearing will take place. This only highlights the importance of substance abuse treatment. For more information regarding couples drug rehab, please contact (888) 325-2454

Retired Pro Hockey Players Will Take CBD for Brain Injury Study

Over the last decade, the NFL has urged its presidents to allow the use of medical cannabis. Many health trainers who treat these players have pushed for marijuana as an alternative treatment for the player’s injuries. Now, the NHL is following their path. Retired hockey players have joined one of the most extensive studies of its kind.

A project between Neeka Health, the NHL Alumni Association, and Canadian company Canopy Growth are said to take place next yeat. The main goal is to explore the true potential of cannabis in sports. The Canadian cannabis company will be leading the experts of 100 participants. Fifty athletes will receive CBD, or cannabidiol, in a controlled study to assess whether the compound is safe and effective for treating brain trauma while the other half of the participants will take a placebo.

“We are reasonably optimistic that cannabis, and especially the CBD part of cannabis, can relieve a lot of that suffering,” said Dr. Charles Tator, a neurosurgeon who specializes in concussions.

He added, “It’s rather sad when you see these giants of sport having to deal with terrible headaches and emotional issues as well — there’s quite a bit of anxiety and depression and PTSD in athletes that have gone unrecognized.”

As an athlete experiences head injuries or trauma, it will lead to permanent damage, leading to stress disorders, dementia, or mood swings in some players. However, in some cases, concussions can ignite a life-threatening hemorrhage in the brain. According to multiple studies, cannabis can reduce inflammation and even has the ability to regenerate damaged brain and nerve cells

As of today, the NHL still bans hockey players from taking any cannabis product, medicinially or recreationally. Although CBD products lack high amounts of THC, some traces can still show up on a regular drug test. However, the NHL has been known to be one of the laxest pro league when it comes to drug test for cannabis. For example, ESPN reported if NHL players come up hot during a drug test, league doctors weigh whether they believe the player may have a drug abuse problem. When they deem it a problem they will issue the players to a drug counseling class. In some instances the league will give fines or suspend the player.

Although, unlike the NFL, the NHL does not permeanlty ban players for smoking only weed. The sports league may soon follow the NHL’s league prior to the histoircal sports study.

Santa Ana and Laguna Agree to Join Forces and Handle the Out of Control Homelessness

Agreements between Laguna Beach and Santa Ana regarding Federal lawsuit that remains to outline the way Orange County handles the spiraling homelessness problem. Each city has joined forces with multiple other counties that have already agreed to build shelters. These shelters would include beds and kitchens, along with taking a “healthcare-first” approach to dealing with the homeless.

The city of Laguna Beach will continue to run its Alternative Sleeping Location, including a small shelter with 45 beds. The Laguna Center is the only low barrier emergency shelter located in South Orange County.

Santa Ana has also agreed to open another 200- bed homeless shelter. The Link, a county-ran 200-bed homeless shelter, is already located in the city along with the Courtyard, which holds 425-beds. Each of the cities’ settlements requires health experts to assess the homeless who seek to find shelter and will be placed based on their health and needs.

If the shelters refuse anyone a bed, anti-camping and loitering laws can be enforced. Cities must also have and move towards offering beds for 60% of the homeless population in their town. Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Tustin, Orange, and the county have all settled in the agreement. Surrounding cities including, Orange County’s North Service Planning Area, which includes Villa Park, Yorba Linda, Placentia, Brea, La Habra, Buena Park, La Palma, Cypress, Los Alamitos, Stanton, Fullerton, Anaheim, and Orange. have also signed similar agreements.

“We are pleased with this settlement, and it is consistent with this [City] Council’s approach to matters of this kind,” Laguna Mayor Pro Tem Steve Dicterow said in a statement. “We want to balance the rights of individuals with the rights of the public to public safety.”

Los Angeles Moves Towards Vaping Ban as Death Toll Rises

As the death toll continues to rise for vape users, so does the intensity in the courtroom. Los Angeles, among many other cities, is considering banning all e-cigarettes and vaping devices in the city. A decision so extreme that it could but thousands of Los Angeles based vaping companies out of business. The city officials are hoping this ban would help curb the sickness caused by these unapproved vapes.

Reports of more than 1,000 people have been diagnosed with severe lung damage, and politicians around the county have been pushing to restrict e-cigarettes and any related product.

The cities proposal was introduced at Tuesday’s City Council meeting and announced that if passed, it would prohibit the sale of e-cigarette and vaping devices until they are considered safe by the Food and Drug Administration. Since the hype of vapes started, the FDA has taken no action to approve any devices, so the new law would, unfortunately, ban all of them in the market.

“The reports of illness and death caused by unregulated vaping devices is a public health crisis,” indicates the motion introduced by Councilman Paul Koretz. “Los Angeles is not content to wait and do nothing as the numbers of illnesses and even deaths associated with unregulated vaping devices increases daily.”

His proposal was based on a council committee focused on health, which would vet the idea before they sent the bill too full council vote. Before the approval city, lawyers would draft an ordinance for council approval.

The CDC has begun to flood the public with warnings and reports, cautioning users to slow down and make sure their source, even though not FDA approved, is credible or tested. A total of 18 have died nationwide due to lung issues, and many more are suffering. Although the claims appear to be linked to all vaping devices, many agree that the majority of sick people are reporting THC carts as the primary cause. Yet, almost all of the new bans are aimed at nicotine delivered via e-cigarettes, which some medical experts believe can aid smokers who want to quit using conventional cigarettes.

“No one in Los Angeles wants to look uncool by bringing up genuine dangers posed by illicit THC products,” explained Gregory Conley, head of the advocacy group American Vaping Assn. “But unless they want these illnesses and deaths to continue to happen, someone has to do it.”

Since the ban has been targeted at e-cigs, many experts predict that smokers who have used the devices as alternatives will be forced to go back to the conventional cigarette. Many experts also believe this will fire the black market, causing even more dangerous products.

“What bans like this are likely to do is increase the use of illicit products and decrease regulation, which ironically will expand the use of the products that are causing folks to get sick,” announced Leo Beletsky, a public health professor at Northeastern University.

The magnitude of the complaints has some officials pushing for banning only flavored tobacco products, which have been linked back to young people and high schoolers. According to the 2019 national survey by the University of Michigan found that 1 in 4 of the nation’s 12th-graders has smoked an e-cig in the last month. A growing trend that experts fear will reverse decades of lowering tobacco use among children.

Los Angeles County has since passed a ban last week that will ban flavored e-cigarettes as well as menthol cigarettes starting November. The outlaw will apply to 1 million people who live within the county lines. Not only are large cities proposing bans, but the Trump administration has also proposed a ban on flavored e-cigarettes, and several states, like Ohio and Washington.

CBD Inflammation Reduction Could Help Alzheimer’s Disease

CBD Oil and its emerging benefits have been all the rage since recent legalization of hemp growth and marijuana usage in California. According to a variety of different sources, CBD’s benefits range widely across many different areas of ailments – from the relief of depression and anxiety, to even the lessening of multiple sclerosis symptoms.

All claims must be viewed critically when it comes to recently-FDA-approved products. However, recent studies do suggest that CBD may have an incredibly significant impact on reducing the inflammation in one’s body. Thus, CBD is also much speculated to assist in lessening the distressing symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

The United States and other western countries are seeing an influx of post-big-pharma alternative medicinal approaches than ever before – and it may be for good reasons. The decline in cognitive function due to diseases like Alzheimer’s, or other dementia-related disorders, is stressful and frightening. Methods are being researched and tried quickly to solve and cure this elusive disease, and not all of them are considered traditional.

Alzheimer’s Disease And Inflammation

Alzheimer’s Disease is a progressive, distressing brain disorder that occurs mostly in elderly patients. This disease consists typically of significant memory loss, the frequent inability to form new memories, erratic or unpredictable behavior, and language troubles. Ultimately, Alzheimer’s involves much brain cell deterioration and neurotransmission depletion.

Some genes contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s in a later age, but they are not the end-all-be-all contributor in the manifestation of this brain disease. Most recently, research results have pointed heavily to the body’s immune system functions when discussing possible significant causes of Alzheimer’s.

Many factors can cause something called inflammation in the body and brain, such as injuries, dormant viruses, underlying bacterial infections, unhealthy gut flora, and even mental and physical stress. Inflammation is a response to the body trying to fight off something it deems dangerous or threatening. In the case of Alzheimer’s, internal swelling happens in the body when, once the disease develops, the body cannot clear the inhibiting and disorienting blockages that exist in brain cells.

CBD For Alzheimer’s Disease

Dementia Care Central mentions that “According to researchers at California’s Salk Institute, their 2017 study has found evidence that cannabinoids such as CBD could help remove dementia [an umbrella term encompassing Alzheimer’s] from brain cells. While the US Food and Drug Administration has yet to approve a CBD drug to treat dementia, it has approved a CBD-based drug for treating epilepsy.

There are three ways CBD can work to improve health outcomes for persons with dementia: by reducing inflammation, by reducing oxygen buildup, and by working as a brain stimulant and neuroprotectant. From a user’s perspective, CBD may reduce stress and anxiety in the individual with dementia as well as reduce the decline of memory and other brain functions.”

Although CBD is derived from the marijuana plant, the effects of CBD are famously non-intoxicating. Even though it works on some of the brain’s neurochemicals, it does not produce the “high” effect that its partner THC does when consumed in marijuana.

Stress And Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s puts physical and mental stress on its sufferers. Emotional stress, surprisingly, has been highly linked to illnesses of all kinds for decades now, and more evidence is suggesting it can contribute significantly to terminal and progressive diseases. It’s noteworthy that CBD has not been studied as extensively as other methods of treating Alzheimer’s. However, researchers may have found a small key in unlocking the door to solving the mysterious ways to fight Alzheimers.

Emotional stress, believe it or not, also proves to cause inflammation in the brain. Using CBD oil for its emotional relief may even have prevention-based health benefits when it comes to later development of brain diseases, but this is, of course, purely speculation at the present moment.

Choosing CBD Products For Relief

Not all CBD products are the same; consumers must seek out the most trusted brands when choosing an item that they will be consuming. Some highly-regarded CBD comes in the form of liquid, known as a tincture, in a small bottle with a dropper. This liquid can be taken directly by mouth or put in liquids and foods. Sometimes people also consume CBD through a vaporizer. CBD also comes in the form of body lotions and ointments that can be used to relieve arthritis and joint pain.

Physical inflammation, oxygen buildup, and mental stress have all been shown to make symptoms of Alzheimer’s significantly worse. CBD products, luckily, have recently shown the ability to improve all of these detriments. Even if CBD can’t wholly reverse Alzheimer’s, it may have the potential to slow it down or relieve symptoms that are associated with it due to its anti-inflammatory effects.

The CBD Revolution: A Guide To The Next Evolution Of Self-Care

CBD products are appearing everywhere, from shopping malls to department stores, touting a wide range of benefits. Now more than ever, it is important to understand exactly what to look for when approaching CBD products.

The topic of CBD has gotten quite a bit of press since the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill. This bill in part federally legalized the industrial production of hemp, thereby opening the door to a wide range of CBD products to enter the marketplace. Tinctures, topicals, vapor products and even edibles and pet products have all become available from a wide range of manufacturers. As with any new product category, navigating the maze of information, brands and terminology can prove confusing.

CBD is short for Cannabidiol, which is one of many phytochemicals which naturally occur within the hemp plant. Hemp is a member of the cannabis family, and while it appears similar to marijuana there are distinct differences. Most importantly, hemp does not contain nearly the same levels of THC, the psychoactive compound that users of marijuana may seek out. As such, all legitimate CBD products contain less than 0.3% THC. This is well below the levels required to experience any type of psychoactive effects, and represents the legal limit allowed by Federal Law.

Proponents of CBD make many claims about the health effects of CBD, which help to provide the source for much of the attention. It should be noted, that the research required to substantiate such claims still has not yet reached sufficient levels to which the Federal and Local governments will allow manufacturers to make health or benefit claims directly. As such, any product claiming to cure any health ailment or disease should be approached with caution. Users of CBD have reported various levels of success achieved by implementing quality CBD into a daily self-care regimen to such an extent that it is beginning to capture a spotlight for a multitude of use cases.

Great care should be exercised when choosing where to buy and what brand to use while first exploring CBD. Amazon currently does not allow for CBD products to be sold on their website, however many consumers have been fooled by misrepresented products sold on the Amazon platform in violation of this policy. Most legitimate brands sell directly from their own website, or on a retail website which carries a wider selection of legitimate brands. Premium CBD Supply is an excellent example of such an online CBD store, offering a wide array of curated CBD products which are sourced directly from the manufacturer or established distributors. Trusted web-stores like Premium CBD Supply offer customers a wide range of affordable premium CBD options, clearly and accurately represented along with a customer service phone number to provide personalized guidance.

In addition to carefully choosing a reputable retailer, legitimate brands will always have third party lab reports available in order to authenticate the product. Testing typically includes verification of the amount of CBD present, as well as terpenes and other phytochemicals which the user may seek. The lab reports also verify that the amount of THC present is below 0.3%, and that no heavy metals or pesticides are present in the product. Many brands will also verify the source the hemp used in the production of the CBD extract, and users should favor a verifiably American sourced product.

Choosing a CBD product is a personalized decision, as there are many options available. Tinctures provide users with an intimate and raw experience. Simply place a drop under the tongue, and swallow. More creative and sometimes flavorful CBD experiences can include vapable products like CBD vape cartridges, vape juice, disposable pens and even gummies. Each delivery method has their own set of pros and cons, but with no shortage of choices there is plenty of room to explore personal preferences.

CBD topicals and cosmetics may be the use category in which CBD has made the largest splash. High end retailers are beginning to add these products to their store shelves, and the United States Navy recently announced that its sailors are permitted to use topical CBDs for the first time. Many commonly used products are now being offered with the added benefit of CBD, including lotions, creams, facial masks, bath bombs and more.

The market for CBD products is still rapidly expanding and will likely continue to do so as more consumers become properly acquainted.  Those who have the appropriate expectations and exercise a certain level of caution when choosing products are much more likely to have a positive experience. The possibilities for the application of CBD in everyday life are being heavily researched and with time may prove to have a large impact on how consumers approach self-care products.

Faster Eradication of Sleeping Sickness and Promotion of Private –Public Health Innovations

DNDi publicly declared support for WHO endorsement of the first all-oral treatment of sleeping sickness since it set the pace for future speedy treatments of sleeping sickness leading to eradication and promotion of public-private partnerships in health innovations.

DNDi has foreseen the impact of WHO endorsement of fexinidazole listing in essential medicines list to promote public acceptance and promote the government’s work to eradicate sleeping sickness which also is a big boost to encourage innovation through private-public partnerships.

WHO endorsement of fexinidazole the world’s first all-oral treatment for sleeping sickness and a breakthrough health innovation in treating the neglected tropical diseases was announced in July 2019.

The WHO endorsement by officially registering fexinidazole as essential medicine adds to approvals of endorsements use obtained in the 2018 European Medicines Agency after obtaining acceptance for use in some countries.

Fexinidazole is already being used in high burden sleeping sickness areas like the Democratic Republic of Congo. The government of Congo didn’t cite any obstacles when they commenced using fexinidazole to officially use the drug as a treatment of sleeping sickness.

But then Congo was one of the trial centres of the first all-oral treatment for sleeping sickness and thereafter the European Medicines Agency announced successful clinical trials in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) which showed that those who used the drug fexinidazole got cured.

DNDi, however, argued that WHO’s listing of first all-oral treatment for sleeping sickness as essential medicines is perceived by the public as superior endorsement will create more public confidence to use the drug and create awareness on public-private partnerships.

Fexinidazole was developed to help countries with the problem of sleeping sickness treat it better. It is a 10-day once – a – day treatment for sleeping sickness. It works for both stage 1 and chronic stage 2 of sleeping sickness where parasites have crossed the blood barrier.

The drug eliminates the previous need for admission in hospitals and several diagnostic and treatment procedures because it can be used at home. Also, it is less toxic compared to the previous drugs used that had severe side effects such as melarsoprol.

“Results showed that fexinidazole could, therefore, eliminate the need for systematic hospitalization and potential reduction in a number of lumbar punctures, ” stated DNDi.

Almost every stage of the process of development of fexinidazole has been characterized by public relations approvals. During the process of obtaining regulation for the medicine done in alignment with WHO laws outside Europe which is article 58, the high endemic countries DRC and Uganda were allowed to participate in the regulations review which followed by the approvals.

This is in view that medicine solves the huge burden of sleeping sickness in the high burden areas such as entire Africa and especially sub – Saharan Africa where the deadly disease previously killed 5% of patients even with medication and without treatment was a death sentence. The fatal sleeping made people vulnerable to causing stigmatized mental health problems manifested in Nero psychiatric symptoms including aggression, psychosis and disruption of sleep.

With all the benefits of fexinidazole drug, DNDI still stated that the listing will increase the confidence of more governments in especially those in high burden countries to include the drug in their drugs list.DNDi applauded the personnel and organizations who worked to ensure that fexinidazole not only obtains approval but also gets the prestigious WHO Essential Medicines Listing for demonstrating a commitment to working to serve the masses affected by the deadly tropical disease of sleeping sickness.

“Inclusion of Fexinidazole is also a further sign of WHO and Sanofi’s commitment to ensuring swift deployment of this paradigm-changing treatment. The WHO’s Essential Medicines List is used by countries to guide decisions on which products need to be made widely available for their populations. It will spur governments in endemic countries to include Fexinidazole in their treatment guidelines,” stated Dr. Natalie Strub-Wourgaft, Director of Neglected Tropical.

To encourage innovation they let people know that Fexinidazole was made out of a drug that was abandoned in 1980. The new drug fexinidazole is approved for use to treat sleeping sickness for both stage one and stage two of the disease of sleeping sickness. The medicine that is recommended for use for both children and adults in the development of known cures was abandoned in the 1980.

”Fexinidazole is a 5-Nitroimidazole derivative that was rediscovered in 2005 during DNDi’s search for compounds with anti – parasitic activity, after being developed and abandoned in 1980,” stated DNDi.

Alarming VA Report Totals Decade of Veteran Suicides

An alarming and concerning report released by The Department of Veterans Affairs states at least 60,000  veterans died by suicide between 2008 and 2017. Even with these numbers, the crisis seems only to be growing; suicide prevention continues to be the VA’s top priority.

The total population of veterans declined by 18% over that period, with more than 6,000 veterans committing suicide annually, reported the VA’s 2019 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report.

Overall, the data show the suicide rate is increasing. The report claims that more than 6,100 veterans died by suicide, an increase of 2% over 2016 and a total increase of 6% since 2008. They also noted that Firearms were the means of suicide in 70.7% of male veteran suicide deaths and 43.2% of female veteran suicide deaths in 2017.

They also pointed out the concerning growth suicide rate among former National Guard and Reserve members who were never federally deployed, and never received VA services. There were 919 suicides in 2017, an average of 2.5 per day, within that population. According to the report, 12.4% of all military deaths in 2017 were among this population.

“VA is working to prevent suicide among all veterans, whether they are enrolled in VA health care or not,” Wilkie explained. “That’s why the department has adopted a comprehensive public health approach to suicide prevention, using bundled strategies that cut across various sectors — faith communities, employers, schools and health care organizations, for example — to reach veterans where they live and thrive.”

Discovering the CB3 Receptor Could be the Medical Breakthrough of Human History

The research of marijuana and cannabinoid receptors has been a restricted area in science. With the new technology and new legalization laws scientist have begun to explore the magical world of cannabinoid receptors. These findings could lead to medical advancements that could change humans forever.

After the U.S government finally removed its harsh restrictions, experts began to research possible medical uses for cannabis. They explored whole dimensions of human biochemistry that had existed before, however, pushed into the shadows. The discovery of the endocannabinoid system in 1990 changed the way scientists looked at marijuana. The research proved that the cannabinoid system is a vital component of the central nervous system. It plays a significant role in almost everything like cognitive processes, pain sensation, appetite regulation, and physical activity.

Since the discovery, it has opened a window to the unknown and the unwanted for some. Due to the importance of the endocannabinoid system, it warrants extensive government-funded research. Many experts claim the discovery was like when Europe discovered America. Unlike the discovery of gold and tobacco, the endocannabinoid system promises new treatments or cures for cancer, auto-immune disorders, and depression. This system could be the human’s fountain of youth if it is studied correctly.

As of now, the popular endocannabinoid system receptors are known as the CB1 and CB2. The two modules are protein molecules that receive chemical signs from the outside cell. For example, they are the cables in the back of the TV that is controlled by a point of a remote. The signals will sit dormant until they receive a sign. For decades due to the restricted research, CB1 and CB2 stood alone. However, now experts have announced they have located an additional receptor. A molecule that could crack the code for many untreatable conditions.

The new receptor is being called the GPR55 but may soon be known as CB3. GPR55 was first discovered in 1999 in several parts of the brain like the hippocampus, cerebellum, thalamus and more. However, newer studies have found that the receptor also hides in other parts of the body, like the spleen, gastrointestinal tract, and adrenal glands.

The scientist also confirms it is present in Cancer Cells. This new molecule is drastically different from CB1 and CB2, sharing less than 15 percent of its amino acidy identify with either.

This also means that the new CB3 found all over your brain and in multiple other vital organs is operating a new and different way than scientists once that. For example, it would be like finding new nerves in the toe that do not respend the same as the ones in your fingers do. Instead of physical objects, they can sense magnetic fields and objects.

The presence of GPR55 in cancer cells may seem like something to worry about at first. Scientists say it is exciting. Since the exact functions of GPR55 are still unknown, experts hope they can pinpoint the real reason it is present. This could possess more insight on how cancer spreads and how to stop it.

The theories floating around about the makeup of CB3 Are that the body may have the strength to transform one kind of cannabinoid into another. If this is true, CB3 could be used to engineer a change-resistance type of cannabinoid that would slow the growth of tumors.

More research is being done; however, the potential benefits CB3 has for humankind could change medicine for good.

Ketamine for Major Depression Treatment

More than 300 million people around the world have depression, according to the World Health Organization.  It is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Depression can also be challenging to treat, as each individual reacts differently to antidepressants. Antidepressants can also take weeks to take full effect. Some individuals who are experiencing difficulties finding an effective treatment are turning to ketamine therapy for major depression.

What Is Major Depression?

Major depression is an ongoing feeling of sadness, numbness, or hopelessness. People diagnosed with depression typically lose interest in activities they once enjoyed. They may struggle with daily activities like going to work or school, and they may find it challenging to concentrate. Major depression is more than just a case of the blues. It’s persistent, lasting for weeks, months, or even years.

Living with untreated depression is difficult. It can be hard to do simple self-care activities like cooking, eating, and showering. Some people also experience suicidal thoughts, which can be distressing and lead to suicide attempts. Some feel ashamed about experiencing a mental health condition, and there is still a stigma around having a mental illness. It’s vital to remember that depression is no one’s fault. It is an illness, and there is nothing wrong with seeking help.

What Is Ketamine?

Ketamine has a history of abuse, which is where most people have heard of it. The FDA approved a medication for treating major depression, esketamine, which is derived from ketamine. It is a nasal spray, and in one study, 70% of patients with treatment-resistant depression improved, compared to about 50% of the placebo group (this group did not receive the esketamine treatment).

Typically, medications for depression only work for as long as they are in your system. If you stop taking the medication, the depression may return. Ketamine is different, though. Ketamine helps brain connections in your cortex to regrow. This means the positive effects stay even when you don’t use ketamine. Ketamine also takes effect in as little as 24 hours.

Is Ketamine Therapy for Major Depression Safe?

Ketamine is used for treatment-resistant depression. This means that you have tried standard treatments, including therapy and antidepressants, but you are still experiencing symptoms. Ketamine does have a risk of side effects, but traditional antidepressants do as well. People involved in a ketamine study experienced side effects such as dizziness, dissociation, and nausea. These effects typically occurred soon after taking ketamine and cleared up in less than two hours.

Even though the FDA approved esketamine, studies are still being conducted to ensure its safety. Some experts are concerned about the potential for withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms occur when someone becomes dependent on a drug. Withdrawal also occurs with some traditional antidepressants such as Effexor, so many may find it worth trying, even with those concerns.

If you’re considering ketamine therapy for major depression, it’s important to talk to an experienced professional, like a psychiatrist, to determine whether it’s right for you. As of now, esketamine must be taken under medical supervision, and you have to be supervised for two hours after you use the spray. This means it’s not the most convenient option right now, but for some, it could be life-changing.
