US Legalization of Marijuana is a ‘Threat to China’ According to Beijing

New reports from Beijing’s leading drug enforcement body claims that the recent legalization of marijuana in Canada and parts of the United States for a massive increase in the number of drugs being smuggled into the country, declaring it a “new threat to China.”

During a press conference in Beijing Monday, Liu Yuejin, deputy director of the China National Narcotics Control Commission, announced that the number of marijuana users in China grew by more than 25% in 2018, that’s about 24,000 people.

“In two years, we have found increasing cannabis trafficked from North America to China,” claimed, Liu Yuejin, deputy director of the China National Narcotics Control Commission, at a press conference on Monday June 17, however he did point out that there are “few cannabis abusers in China” compared to the total population.

Liu reported that China had intercepted 115 known packages sent through international postal facilities. The boxes contained f “55 kilograms (1940 ounces) of marijuana and other cannabis products” last year.

Authorities have confirmed that the suspects found in connection with the cannabis were international students or students who have flown home from studying or working aboard. Lui claims that most of the drugs had been transported through their international express delivery, although he did not clarify how many of the packages came from North America.

As a result, China punished those caught smuggling or trafficking drugs, including foreigners. Those found with more than 50 grams (1.76 ounces) of a controlled substance can face the death penalty.

China has been known for its harsh punishments and regulation of drugs, and in recent years, it has increased due to accusations of producing and providing fentanyl to America. The allegations have caught the attention of many marijuana advocates and politicians, however, the recent marijuana legalization movement in North America is only starting to skyrocket.

April, the Chinese government declared that it would crack down on fentanyl-related substances. Fentanyl is known to be 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine and 30 to 50 times more potent than heroin. According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, it was linked to one in four overdose deaths in America in 2018.
