More Men Are Turning to CBD as an Alternative Treatment to Prostate Cancer

In America, men have Prostate cancer so commonly that it is the second most prevalent form of cancer right behind skin cancer. The American Cancer Society reports that there were over 164,000 new cases in 2018, and 29,430 men died from the disease.

Around 14% of men will be diagnosed with the disease during their lifetime. Since prostate cancer is the second most fatal cancer after lung cancer approximately 2.6% of men diagnosed with cancer will die from it.

Despite the treatments already available to treat the conditions, the study of CBD and cancer cells have suggested that it not only slows down the growth of cancer cells but could kill prostate cancer cells – yet this is not verified through a clinical trial.

According to an early study conducted in 2006, scientist examined the impact of THC on nine subjects with a specific type of brain tumor known as glioblastoma multiforme. The standard life expectancy of these patients was 24 weeks; however, the researchers determined that THC slowed down the growth of the tumor cells in vitro, and also decreased the number of tumor cells in two of the subjects.

Prostate cancer and marijuana have been studied for years; in 2012 direct results in lab tests on animals have led to the publishing of an essential paper in 2012. The article cited a 2005 study that discussed how prostate cancer cells had increased expression for cannabinoid receptors, explaining that the cells may be vulnerable to active therapeutic cannabis compounds.

At the moment doctors can treat localized prostate cancer with an attempt to cure. Most medical doctors will locate and treat the tumor with radical surgery, external radiation therapy, radiation seeds, cryotherapy or laser therapy. However, Metastatic cancer cannot be cured, yet can be controlled for years. When treatment is no longer working, many men are referred to Chemotherapy.

For many years now the use of cannabis among chemo patients has skyrocketed because of the quick and positive effects. Patients continuously report that the use of marijuana eases the side effects that come along with the chemotherapy. New research has dived into what cannabinoids are capable of, showing how it may slow or more importantly all together kill the progression of cancer cells.

Although treatments that are currently being used to treat localized prostate cancer are deemed reliable, an alarming number of men are turning to CBD as a natural alternative, with the intention of staying away from the harmful side of effects of pharmaceutical medications.

However, since marijuana remains federally illegal, clinical trials and an inherent lack of funding have slowed the research on marijuana/CBD and prostate cancer.
